January 22 -- WASHINGTON, DC – At a January 22 dinner in Washington, DC organized by the Coalition for a Secure and Democratic Ukraine, the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Vitaliy Haiduk discussed the current political situation in Ukraine, describing the politics between President Yushchenko, Prime Minister Yanukovych and opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. September 25- 29 -- Washington, DC – The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation and its partners hosted the third working session of the U.S.-Ukraine Policy Dialogue in Washington, DC from September 25 – September 29, 2006. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S.-Ukraine Policy Dialogue is designed to supplement and deepen the official bilateral dialogue between Ukraine and the United States.

More than 60 policy makers from the United States and Ukraine met to discuss U.S.-Ukraine relations through the prism of foreign policy and national security; politics and governance; media and information; and business and economics.

Program participants included deputies from Ukraine’s Parliament, representatives of the U.S. Department of State, National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine, Ministry of the Economy of Ukraine, U.S. and Ukrainian think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and media and business representatives. August 2006

The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, through its Maryniuk Scholarship Fund, awarded 25 students $5,625 in college stipends in the village of Zheldets in the Kamianka-Buskiy region outside of L’viv on May 28.  Three others students, from the nearby village of Volia Zhovtanetska, received scholarships totaling $450 from the Andrew Kun Scholarship Program. July 2006

July 27 -- The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation along with the Embassy of Ukraine, Sigma Bleyzer Foundation, Ukraine-U.S. Business Council, Ukrainian American Coordinating Council, Ukrainian Federation of America, and Ukrainian National Women's League of America sponsored a Ukrainian table at the Taste America event that took place on Capitol Hill. Congressmen enjoyed Ukrainian food and drinks and received hand-outs with information on Ukraine. [read more]

July 1-9, 2006 - Youth Leadership Program 2006. For three consecutive years, 2002 – 2004, the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation hosted a Youth Leadership Program (YLP) in Washington, DC for American, Ukrainian-American and Ukrainian students on topics in U.S.-Ukraine relations, leadership skills, public policy and the political process, the need for political activism, and the many careers available in leadership.  The Foundation has seen its YLP alumni internalize the program’s messages as they move on to excellence and leadership at their universities, in internships, and in service projects in the United States and Ukraine. [Read more]

June 11-16 -- The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation hosts Tymofiy Motrenko, Head of Civil Service of Ukraine, Andriy Vyshnevsky, Director of the Center for Support of Civil Service Institutional Development, Main Department of Civil Service of Ukraine, and Oleksandr Demyanyuk, Head of the Personnel Management Department, MFA of Ukraine as a part of its project to assist Ukraine's Civil Service Reform in its stated goals of improving personnel management systems. 

June 7 -- Ivan Vasiunyk, First Deputy to the Head of the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine addresses Ukrainian internal policy issues during his speech at the Embassy of Ukraine, Washington, D.C.

June 6 -- The Coalition for a Secure and Democratic Ukraine meets with the new U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, William B. Taylor, Jr., to discuss ways to strengthen the U.S.-Ukraine partnership.

June 5 -- The staff members of the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation attend a swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, William B.Taylor, Jr.. Condoleezza Rice presides the ceremony that takes place at the U.S. Department of State.

February 2 -- The International Republican Institute holds an address, , "On the Role of New Europe in Advancing Democracy in Eurasia," given by the Honorable Arturas Paulauskas,Chairman of the Lithuanian Parliament.

January 31 -- The Kennan Institute has a panel, "Preview of the 2006 Ukrainian Parliamentary Elections." January 26 -- The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation is invited and attends the National Democratic Institute's roundtable discussion on "Current and Future Programmatic Activities in Ukraine."

January 26 -- Kennan Institute holds a book launch - Creating Diversity Capital: Transnational Migrants in Montreal, Washington & Kyiv where Blair A. Ruble, Director of the Kennan Institute and author of Creating Diversity Capital: Transnational Migrants in Montreal, Washington, and Kyiv will present the book.

January 10 -- USAID and Freedom House hold a conference discussion, "Reaching for Democracy:
Successes and Challenges to Freedom and Democracy." Mr. Andrew S. Natsios, Administrator, U.S. Agency for International Development, gives the keynote address. Panel speakers include Dr. Mike McFaul, Director, Center for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law, Stanford University and Ms. Jennifer Windsor, Executive Director, Freedom House (Moderator)

Januay 9 -- William Green Miller, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, and Senior Policy Scholar, Woodrow Wilson Center gives a presentation at the Woodrow Wilson Center titles, "The State of Ukrainian Democracy."

December 8 -- Freedom House, Eurasia Foundation and PAUCI Foundation, hold a discussion and reception in the Capitol building entitled: "Ukraine between Elections: Reform or Stagnation?" Panel speakers include Jan Pieklo, Executive Director, PAUCI Foundation, Mykola Riabchyk, Essayist and Co-founder, Krytyka Monthly, Olexander Sushko, Director,Center for Peace, Conversion, and Foreign Policy, and Olexiy Haran, Regional Vice President for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, Eurasia Foundation.

December 8 -- The National Press Club holds their "Afternoon Newsmaker on Ukraine: Still Out in the Cold?" The three panelists, Dr. Olexiy Haran, Eurasia Foundation, VP for Ukraine, Belarus, & Moldova, Hryhoriy Nemyria, Advisor to Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and Mr. Jan Pieklo, Director, PAUCI Foundation, discuss what they see as revolution, reform, stagnation, and setback in Ukraine.

December 5 -- AEI hosts a panel titled, "The Orange Revolution: A Year After. Panel speakers include the Honorable Paula Dobriansky, Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, Anders Aslund, CEIG, and Taras Kuzio, GWU.

December 2 -- The Elliot School of International Affairs at GWU holds a workshop, "The Orange Revolution: One Year On," to evaluate developments in Ukraine on the first anniversary of the Orange Revolution and Viktor Yushchenko's election as Ukraine's third president. Presenters include Henry Hale, GWU, Paul D'Anieri, University of Kansas, Taras Kuzio, GWU, Hope M. November 21 -- At Kennan Institute Olena Yatsunska, Associate Professor, Mykolayiv National Shipbuilding University; Kluge Fellow, Library of Congress discusses, "Image Myths in the 2004 Presidential Campaign in Ukraine."

November 10-12 -- John A. Kun, Vice President USUF, speaks with Ukrainian-Americans in Anchorage, Alaska.

November 3 -- A roundtable discussion with Ion Manole, Executive Director, human rights NGO "Promo-Lex," and Ion Iovcez, Principal of "Lucian Blaga" High School is sponsored by the International Republican Institute and the Moldova Fondation. Upcoming Moldovan December 2005 elections are discussed, as well as the absence of democratic institutions; human rights violations and the difficulty of freedom of expression; and restrictions on education in the Romanian language in Transnistria.

November 2 -- Jackson-Vanik Graduation Coalition members attend a joint press-conference in the U.S. Capitol Building held by Congressman Curt Weldon and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov. Congressman Weldon says that he will be "demanding action, no more words… it is time for the President, democrats and republicans, together, to graduate Ukraine."

November 1 -- The Jackson-Vanik Graduation Coalition meets to continue developing a strategy to encourage the US Congress to graduate Ukraine from the Jackson-Vanik Amendment trade restrictions. The list of Coalition Members has grown to over 30 national and regional Ukrainian-American and Jewish-American groups, businesses and NGOs.

November 1 - Tthe Carnegie Endowment for International Peace holds a breakfast meeting with Yuriy Yekhanurov, Prime Minister of Ukraine who speaks about "The Economic Program of the New Ukrainian Government."

November 1 --An address by Yuriy Yekhanurov, Prime Minister of Ukraine, on the policies of the newly-formed Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, is hosted by International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute.

October 2005

October 31 -- Noelle Budwig, U.S.-Ukraine Foundation staff attends the U.S.-Ukrainian Investment Symposium at the Harvard Club of Boston. This inaugural celebration of Ukraine's progress towards economic integration is enlisting the participation of government leaders, corporate executives, investment fund managers, and decorated scholars for an unprecedented look at the state and prospect of Ukraine's integration with the global economy.
Panel 1: The Impact of Reform on Business is moderated by Dr. Sergei Konoplyov Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Speakers include Alexei Danilov, Governor of Lugansk, Sarah Carey, Partner, Squire Sanders, Jaroslawa Johnson, Managing Partner, Chadbourne & Parke, and Peter Koelle, Chairman, International Bank of Moscow.

The Luncheon Keynote Address is given by Konstyantyn Gryschenko, Former Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Former Ambassador to the United States .

After lunch, participants listened to a special case lecture by Professor Rawi Abdelal, Harvard Business School titled, "National Purpose in the World Economy: Interpreting Investment in Russia and Ukraine." Abdelal asks why the regional economy of post-Soviet Eurasia disintegrates among some states and reintegrates among others. His answer is that post-Soviet societies held differing ideas about themselves as nations; differences in their national identities led them to interpret economic dependence on Russia in dramatically contrasting ways. The governments of post-Soviet societies therefore pursued divergent foreign economic policies. The stories of the relationship between Russia and Ukraine, and those two countries' relationships with Europe and the United States, are both consequential and illuminating.

Panel II: Spotlight on Entrepreneurship is moderated by Dr. John Tedstrom, President, Trans-Atlantic Partners Against AIDS. Speakers of the panel are Roman Kyzyk, Managing Partner, Draper Fisher Jurvetson NEXUS, Dorian Foyil, President, Foyil Securities, Ihor Pavlysh, Chairman, 3i, and Elena Voloshina, Ukraine Program Director, IFC.

Panel III: Access to Capital is moderated by John Gillingham III, Harvard Fellow. Speakers include Edward Nassim, Director of Central and Eastern Europe, IFC, Natalie Jaresko, CEO, Horizon Capital; Member, President's FIAC, Kamen Zahariev, Country Director Ukraine, EBRD, and Jeffrey Millikan, Managing Director, Raiffeisen International Bank-Holding.

The Symposium ends with a special address and executive interview from the Deputy Ukrainian Minister of the Economy.

October 25 -- The Center for Strategic and International Studies hosts a conference entitled "Wider Europe & the Transatlantic Link." Introductory remarks made by Zbigniew Brzezinski, Former U.S. National Security advisor and Sorin Ducaru, the Romanian Ambassador to the U.S. Both speakers address the evolution of the "European" identity, highlighting that today there is significantly less of an Eastern/Western distinction.

The first panel discussion focuses on "The Future of NATO and EU Enlargement." Recognized expert on the topic as pertains specifically to Ukraine, Taras Kuzio, visiting Professor at George Washington University, is joined by Omer Taspinar, Director of the U.S.-Turkey project at the Brookings Institute, Vlad Spanu, Executive Director of the Moldova Foundation, Bronislaw Misztal, Professor at Catholic University and Victor Babiuc, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania.

Daniel Fried, U.S. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasia Affairs delivers the keynote address, offering the American perspective on Central and Eastern European integration. Mr. Fried says that pertaining to "wider Europe," the United States and the Bush Administration first and foremost support democracy and an end to tyranny. In terms of Ukrainian integration into NATO, the EU and other global organizations, Fried states "if they do their part, we will do our part… if they don't complete reforms, we won't compromise our standards." An afternoon panel further addresses "Atlanticism in a Wider Europe."

October 19 -- Zhovkva (Lvivska oblast) has opens a new Internet-Library Club for the youth of the community due in part to the support and work of USUF and the generosity of a private donor. Situated in the community's "zamok," funds were directed for reconstruction and renovation of walls/room(s), the purchase of computers, tables, chairs, and other room supplies.

October 18 - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso mentions Ukraine during his talk about "U.S.-European Relations" at the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

During his presentation, President Barroso stated that Ukraine is one of the points of cooperation for the United States and the EU. "In this context, it is not surprising that Europe and America's bilateral political relationship has led to a lot of good cooperation recently - ...on Ukraine..., promoting democracy," said Barroso. USUF staff member, Marta Matselioukh, attended the lecture.

October 17 -- The Jackson-Vanik Graduation Coalition, of which the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation is a key partner, holds its first planning meeting in Washington, DC. In attendence at the meeting are Nadia McConnell, U.S.-Ukraine Foundation President, John Kun, Ulyana Panchishin, Juan Carlos Campos, Christina Redko, and Alana Malick.
Headed by former U.S. Ambassadors to Ukraine, Steven Pifer and William Miller, the Jackson-Vanik Graduation Coalition is working to achieve Ukraine’s graduation from the Jackson-Vanik Amendment before the November 2005 Congressional recess.
Coalition leadership will soon be meeting with key members of Congress and the White House. Congress is currently considering a total of six bills that would graduate Ukraine from Jackson-Vanik and extend permanent normal trade relations status to Ukraine. October 14 - Staff attend an "After the Orange Revolution: The U.S. and Ukraine" presentation. The event is hosted by The Washington Group, and the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
Speakers included David Kramer, Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, and Taras Kuzio, visiting professor at The George Washington University. Moderated by Orest Deychakiwsky, Staff Advisor to the U.S. Helsinki Commission, the panelists assessed the contemporary situation in Ukraine, analyzed the effects of the Orange Revolution, and commented on the direction of U.S.-Ukraine relations for the near future.

October 13 -- Foundation staff host a meeting at the DC office with Alexei G. Kozhenkin, Managing Director, IT - Ukraine Association, who is visiting Washington DC and Fairfax Country as part of a Ukrainian (IT) delegation sponsored by the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. Jan E. Mul, Manager, European Business Development, accompanies Kozhenkin for the meetings. The IT industry in Ukraine is discussed, as well as ways to collaborate with the Foundation and the Fairfax County EDA.

October 8-11 - The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation hosts the 2005 Ukrainian American Youth Association (CYM) Youth Leadership Seminar. John Kun, USUF Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, opens the conference with welcoming remarks. Seminar speakers include Bo Shevchik, Financial Advisor at UBS and former General Manager of Coca-Cola Ukraine, Eugenia Kuzmowycz-Blahy, Chief Operating Officer of Self Reliance NY Federal Credit Union; Andriy Bihun, Director of Youth for the Ukrainian American Youth Association; Mykola Hryckowian, Founder of the Center for U.S.-Ukrainian Relations; Jerry Dutkewych, Director of Country Relations of the Millenium Challenge Corporation, Diana Howansky, Staff Associate at the Ukrainian Studies Program at Columbia University, and Marta Matselioukh, M.A. candidate in Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies at Georgetown University, and U.S.-Ukraine Foundation Administrative Assistant. Lida Mykytyn, former Organizational Director of the Ukrainian Am erican Youth Association, is key in organizing the seminar.
The seminar's participants, high school juniors and seniors from various parts of the United States, are Christina Drozd, Chicago, IL; Marko Diaczun, Strongsville, OH; Simon Kazarenko, Brooklyn, NY; Natalya Kuzewych, Philadelphia, PA; Andrea Popovech, Astoria, NY; Monica Sawchuk, Scarsdale, NY; Yuriy Symczyk, Union, NJ; Michael Ushak, Tenafly, NJ; and Alexandra, Szkafarowsky, Yonkers, NY.

October 11 -- A panel discussion at the U.S. Institute of Peace is entitled "Peaceful Transition- Lessons Learned from Georgia and Ukraine." Panelists include Alexander Gupman, Freedom House, Giorgi Kandelaki, KMARA-Georgia, Taras Kuzio Professor, George Washington University, Sergiy Taran, PORA- Ukraine, Cory Welt, Center for Strategic and International Studies and Anika Binnendijk, graduate student at Tufts University.
The principle themes of the discussion include: why the revolutions were entirely peaceful, how the media played an important role in the success of the revolutions, and what political conditions (ie. existence of a semi-authoritarian state) allowed the revolutions to even take place?

October 6 -- Nadia McConnell hosts a meeting at the DC office for twelve visiting press and mass media representatives from Ukraine. Alla Rogers, Co-Chair, National Press Club's Task Force on Journalism in Emerging Democracies, accompanies the representatives from Ukraine on their five day work session hosted by the National Press Club.

September 2005

September 29 -- Foundation staff attend the Ukraine - U.S. Business Council's first Washington, DC, "Members and Friends Networking and Sherry" event at which Michael Bleyzer, CEO, SigmaBleyzer is a guest speaker. Michael Bleyzer discusses SigmaBleyzer's experience investing in Ukraine.

September 28 -- Foundation staff attend "HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Russia & Ukraine: Strategies for Business & Government Response" at the USA Trade Center in Washington, DC.

September 27 -- Vera Andrushkiw, CPP director, attends "Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation Statehood - Roundtable VI: Ukraine's Transition to an Established National Identity," Washington, DC.

September 26 -- Alana Malick, Foundation Fellow, attends a lecture at the Kennan Institute, by Alexander Motyl, Deputy Director of the Center for Global Change and Governance and Professor in the department of Political Science at Rutgers University. The lecture is entitled, "Two Cheers for Stagnation - Institutional Development and Democracy in Ukraine and Russia."

September 23 -- USUF staff attend the breakfast briefing, "The Role of Local Governments in Consolidation Democracy in Ukraine," at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) in Washington, DC with Oleksandr Popov, Mayor, Komsolmolsk (Poltava region), Ukraine and Volodymyr Udovychenko, Mayor, Slavutych (Kyiv region), Ukraine. In the afternoon, the mayors and Vera Andrushkiw, CPP Director, meet with Dr. Kent Hill, Assistant Administrator of the USAID Bureau for Europe and Eurasia, Marilyn Pifer, Senior Technical Advisor and Senior Program Manager for Basic Research and Higher Education Program at U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation, and George Chopivsky, Chairman, Ukrainian Development Company, L.L.C.

September 22 -- Vera Andrushkiw, CPP Director, Mayor Oleksandr Popov, Komsomolsk, and Mayor Volodymyr Udovychenko, Slavutych, meet with Robert D. Persiko, Youth Programs Division Chief at the Office of Citizen Exchanges of the Department of State, Marcy Kaptur, Congresswoman, William Hudnut, Mayor of Chevy Chase, MD, and Alan Cohen, former Mayor of Ithaca, NY.

September 21 -- A Congressional Breakfast co-sponsored by the Ukrainian Congressional Caucus and the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation is held at the Rayburn House Office Building. Introductions are by Nadia McConnell. Opening remarks are by Representatives Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) and Curt Weldon (R- PA). Keynote address is by Dan Rosenblum, Deputy Coordinator, Department of State Office of the Coordinator for U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia.
Later in the day, participants from the CPP conference attend meetings with Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey, Congressman Maurice Hinchey, and Jeffrey Finkle, President and CEO of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

September 20 -- This marks the first day of the CPP conference in Washington DC. The guests of honor at the conference are Mayor Oleksandr Popov, Komsomolsk and Mayor Volodymyr Udovychenko, Slavutych. Other participants include approximately 25 trainers from the CPP U.S. partner cities. Nadia McConnell opens the conference. Panel 1 is titled: "Economic Development, Above and Beyond CPP." Panel 2 is "Housing and Communal Service, Above and Beyond CPP."

September 18-25 -- CPP has its Housing and Communal Services Internship in Birmingham, Alabama. Ukrainian participants meet with many key leaders in Birmingham, including Mayor Bernard Kincaid.

September 18-25 -- The CPP Economic Development Clusters Internship continues in Springfield and Chicago, Illinois.

September 13 -- The Foundation hosts a lunch meeting at the DC office for the Vital Voices Global Partnership delegation of the Open World Leadership Centers Ukraine. The delegation consists of 8 participants and 2 facilitators of emerging women leaders working with NGOs, CBOs, and government. It is facilitated by Natasha Marks, Associate Director, Global Leadership Institute, Vital Voices Global Partnership.

September 8-11 -- CPP holds the Economic Development Clusters Internship in Washington, DC. The Ukrainian participants consist of city officials and members of business and entrepeneur associations. One highlight of the program is the meeting with Stanley Jackson, Washington, DC, Deputy Mayor on Planning and Economic Development.

August 2005

August 17-18 -- The former Mayor of Kyiv, Oleksandr Mosiyuk, visits with Nadia McConnell and other staff and interns at the Foundation. Mayor Mosiyuk meets with former Senator Joe Tydings. He is visiting Washington DC on a research project sponsored by the Kennan Institute.

August 11 -- The Foundation hosts a lunch meeting at the DC office for a delegation sponsored by Valbin Corporation, Center for International Programs (www.internationalprograms.org). The purpose of the meeting is to expose the delegation to the Foundation's important role in election monitoring and the U.S.-Ukraine Policy Dialogue. The meeting is also a good networking opportunity to establish contacts who can support the delegates' current and future initiatives on furthering democratic development. Various dates -- The Foundation and the Kobzar Society discuss ways to increase cooperation in order to deliver more computer technology and training to Ukraine. Kobzar Society is a non-profit organization based in Lehighton, PA, chartered to assist Ukrainian universities, secondary schools, libraries and other educational institutions by providing them with refurbished computers. To date, the Kobzar Society has delivered over 500 computers to 120 educational institutions throughout Ukraine. Both organizations agree that more critically-needed technology and training can be brought to Ukraine.

May 22 -- USUF President Nadia McConnell visits Chicago at the invitation of Anna Mostovych, President of The Chicago Business & Professional Group, to give a presentation at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. Mrs. McConnell speaks on Building and Sustaining Democracy in Ukraine: The Role of NGOs. During her talk she describes the work done by the Foundation through its various projects, specifically highlighting the activities of the Foundation’s Election Project, which helped to ensure a more democratic presidential campaign and election in Ukraine.

April 2005

April 15 -- USUF Vice-President/COO John A. Kun visits Chicago in April. Mr. Kun had the chance to see and thank Julian Kulas, head of The Heritage Foundation of MB Financial Bank (formerly First Security Federal Savings Bank), and Bohdan Watral, President/CEO of the Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal Credit Union, for their continuing, major support for the Foundation’s programs. Mr. Kun also visits the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and the Ukrainian National Museum, where he receives individualized tours by Marijka Kulczycky and Maria Klimchak, respectively. Ms. Klimchak, who also operates the Ukrainian Wave program on Radio WSBC 1240 AM in Chicago (along with her husband Mykhailo), conducts an interview for the program with Mr. Kun.

April 7-8 -- The Foundation expands its cooperation with the Chicago-based International Cultural Educational Association (ICEA). ICEA, in cooperation with the Sister-Cities International partnership between Chicago and Kyiv and the McCormick Foundation at the Chicago Tribune, initiated a program that gave a group of twelve Ukrainian journalists an opportunity to observe mass-media operations in the United States. The Foundation agreed to facilitate the two-day leg of their journey in Washington, DC. Financial and in-kind support by the Foundation totaled over $2,100. The majority of the translation was done by Ioan Onujec.

March 2005

March 13 -- A lecture by Dr. Lubonyr Luciuk, Adjust Professor in the Depratment of Geography and Fellow at the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto, takes place at the Embassy of Ukraine. The topic is Ukrainian Diaspora -- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

March 10 –- The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Borys Tarasyuk, speaks at a luncheon at the International Republican Institute, participates in the commemoration of the 134th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth, and discusses Ukraine, the U.S. and the EU: The Partnership in Light of the Orange Revolution at The George Washington University.

March 6 -- A report and slide presentation entitled Elections in Ukraine 2004 as seen by local observers is given by Judge Bohdan Futey, Dr. Roman Serbyn and Dr. Yaromyr Oryshkevych at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family.

March 3 –- Richard Green Lugar, U.S. Senator from Indiana, speaks on the topic of A Changing Ukraine at the Kennan Institute.

March 2-3 –- USUF participates in Ukrainian Days in Washington, DC, an event hosted by UNIS.  The goal of “Ukrainian Days” is to promote the concerns of the Ukrainian-American community, and to establish stronger ties with Members of Congress.

March 1 –- Antonina Berezovenko, Visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Slavic Languages at Columbia University, presents on The Rhetoric of Presidential Elections in Ukraine. The discussion, which takes place at the International Republican Institute, focuses on how language serves particular political goals, and influences certain social groups.  Additionally, Dr. Berezovenko examines the public relations techniques relevant for today’s Ukraine.

February 2005

February 17 -- Murray Feshbach, Senior Scholar with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, discusses A Cautionary, but necessary Tale About the Impact of HIV/AIDS in Russia. The event is held at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

February 1 –- In a talk at the Kennan Institute entitled Ukraine after the Crisis: Domestic and Foreign Policy Issues, Volodymyr Dubovyk, Director of the Center for International Studies at Odesa State University, discusses the events surrounding Ukraine’s 2004 presidential elections and possible policy directions of President Viktor Yushchenko and his government.

January 2005

January 27 –- Helping Ukraine Reach the Safe Shore: Foreign Policy Proposals for Europe and the United States is discussed at the Heritage Foundation.  Participants include government officials and non-government experts such as Anders Aslund, Ariel Cohen, Stephen Nix, Radek Sikorski, and Damon Wilson.

January 25 –- Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty hosts a briefing on Then and Now:  Journalism in Ukraine Before and During the Orange Revolution.  Participants include Kyrylo Bulkin, Chief Editor at NART Radio; Alla Vantsak, Director of AB-Radio; Olesya Sadova, Program Director at Nezalezhnist Radio, and Stanislav Zaychenko, Director of Radio Three.

January 24 -- A presentation by Judge Bohdan Futey on The Rule of Law in Ukraine in the Aftermath of the Presidential Elections takes place at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

January 21 -- THE WHITE HOUSE, Office of the Press Secretary announces on January 21, 2005 that President George W. Bush today announced the designation of a Presidential Delegation to attend the Inauguration of his Excellency Viktor Yushchenko, President of Ukraine, on January 23, 2005. The Honorable Colin L. Powell, Secretary of State, will lead the delegation.

Herbst, United States Ambassador to Ukraine, The Honorable Paula Dobriansky, Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs, Mrs. Vera M. January 19 –- The UNDP-sponsored Blue Ribbon Commission Report on Ukraine, titled Proposals for the President:  A New Wave of Reforms, is launched at a breakfast meeting at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

January 18 –- Ambassador Steven Pifer, Orest Deychakiwsky, and Oleksandr Potekhin have a lunch meeting with USUF staff.

January 3-10 -- Art Exhibit of Nadiya Kyrpenko at the Woodrow Wilson Center.  Ms. Kyrpenko works mainly in watercolors.  Her works depict scenes of central Ukraine and Central Asia.
