For three consecutive years, 2002 –
2004, the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation hosted a Youth Leadership Program (YLP)
in Washington, DC for American, Ukrainian-American and Ukrainian
students on topics in U.S.-Ukraine relations, leadership skills, public
policy and the political process, the need for political activism, and
the many careers available in leadership. The Foundation has seen its
YLP alumni internalize the program’s messages as they move on to
excellence and leadership at their universities, in internships, and in
service projects in the United States and Ukraine.
In 2005, the Foundation introduced the
Youth Leadership Program in Ukraine to buttress the inspiring successes
of the Orange Revolution by providing Ukraine’s youth with training and
skills to take on their future roles as leaders and role models in
society and government. Oleh Shamshur, Ambassador of Ukraine to the
United States, and Sheila Gwaltney, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S.
Embassy, officially welcomed students representing 17 communities in
Ukraine, 4 in the U.S. and 1 in France.
This year,
the Foundation, in partnership with the USAID-funded Community
Partnerships Project and The Pylyp Orlyk Institute for Democracy,
selected 26 college students (20 from Ukraine and 6 from the U.S. and
Canada), ages 18-24, to participate in the program. Ukrainian students
were selected among applicants from cities that participate in the
Foundation’s Community Partnerships Project, and small and medium-sized
cities, thus providing students who often lack access to leadership
opportunities in Kyiv with an opportunity to gain the motivation and
skills they need to become leaders in their communities.
The Foundation organized a full schedule
of meetings with government officials and community leaders, seminars
and trainings on themes such as leadership, volunteerism, healthy
lifestyles, and social responsibility, as well as cultural excursions
and a trip to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Exclusion Zone.
