The Sutaruk Scholarship Fund was established by the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation and the Sutaruk Foundation in 2005 in order to educationally benefit and raise the Ukrainian local, national, and cultural consciousness of students in the communities of Dubno, Netishyn and Slavuta. These ancestral cities of the Sutaruks are located in the Rivne and Khmelnytskyj oblasts.
Since the inception of the program, the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to 400-500 students entering or enrolled in university learning.
Annually, students participate in a competitive, application and in-person process. The program recognizes academic achievement and English proficiency on the part of students. Representatives of the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation from Lviv are engaged and monitor the application and award process.
The Sutaruk Foundation, established in 2003, honors the memory of Alex Sutaruk and his parents, John and Catherine Sutar, and their commitment to self-reliance, independence, hope for the future, and education. The foundation invests in programs that fulfill these qualities in four specific categories: environmental preservation, university scholarship for deserving students, improvement in quality of life for senior citizens and the needy, and a stronger Ukraine.
